PROJECT:

Conversion of ground floor shop and extension of building to create two new maisonettes

Chris Hurst, director at Hurst Homes, understands how acoustics can take a back seat in the push to get a project underway. “When you’ve got lots going on with a project, it’s too easy to tell yourself the sound insulation will get sorted, and then before you know it, you’ve got the walls up without having anything sorted.”

Getting Practical Advice

“I knew I was calling in Soundtesting a bit later than was ideal, but Martin was great. He came out to the site and looked at what we had in place so far, then gave me advice on what to do to get the sound test to pass. It was practical advice, like the suggestion to pack the insulation in as tightly as we could, that made a big difference.”

Working with the Complications

“It was a project with a few complications – there was a mixture of old and new construction, as we were converting and extending a shop, with an existing occupied flat above. I know now that this wasn’t the best thing to have done, and it slowed things down. Martin and the sound test engineers were sensitive to the tenants already in the flat, and didn’t disturb them more than they had to.”

Passing Sound Testing – First Time

“When the build was complete, I asked Sound Testing to come back and carry out the sound insulation testing between the flats. As we followed their advice, we passed the sound testing, which was a big relief.”

“The property is now fully occupied and we’ve had no issues with noise. Next time I’ll be sure to call Martin right at the beginning of the project to ensure that the process is smoother!”

Martin, Director and senior acoustic consultant at Soundtesting said “It’s always a challenge to come into a project mid-way, particularly if there are added complications like a mixture of construction types and existing tenants. Chris was great to work with, and genuinely wanted the acoustics to perform well for his tenant’s wellbeing, which is always refreshing. I Look forward to working with him on future projects.”
