Document E Design Advice FAQ’s

How can you help with my design?

Here at Soundtesting.co.uk Ltd we have many years’ experience of acoustic design, supported by our sound insulation testing, which gives us a clear understanding of the benefits and pitfalls of many different construction types. This gives us a clear understanding of the requirements necessary for your building to comply with The Building Regulations Approved Document E. We also offer a UKAS accredited sound insulation testing service which means we can test and issue certification on completion of any works carried out.

What design services are available for Conversions?

Conversion situations provide a range of acoustical issues as the existing structures of buildings have varying performance in relation to sound. If for example a large existing property is being converted into five flats, we can offer the following consultancy options to move your project forward

Consultancy Options include:

  • Site Survey and Report

For conversion situations, there may be many issues that need to be taken into consideration, which can only truly be appreciated if a consultant conducts a site survey.

The site survey will take into consideration weaknesses in the building structure and identify the best methods of achieving the requirements of The Building Regulations Approved Document E 2003, for both separating walls and floors. The site survey allows a report tailored to suit the situation on your development. Within the report any necessary details will be drawn.

  • Full Design Package Review
  • Initial Site Survey
  • Full Report with all critical junction detail drawings
  • Design Team Meeting Attendance
  • On-site inspections during construction
  • Survey Sound Testing – at earliest stage to ensure structures are passing before Pre-Completion testing.

Can you help with Reverberation?

Section 7 of The Building Regulations Document E, relates to Requirement E3 – Reverberation in the common internal parts of buildings containing flats or rooms for residential purposes. We are able to offer a service to calculate the amount of additional absorption to be used in corridors, hallways, stairwells and entrance halls that give access to flats and rooms for residential purposes.

Information we require to calculate:

Full set of plans detailing common areas.
Details of all the surfaces of the common areas.

How much do these services cost?

We are able to provide verbal quotes based off site descriptions, however exact quotations can only be calculated if the full details of the job in question are either posted or emailed to our office. Please see our contact information.
