Controlling noise at work 2005 requires employers to prevent or reduce risks to the health and safety of employees, from exposure to noise in the workplace.
As an employer you are required to:
- Assess the risks to your employees from noise at work
- Take action to reduce the noise exposure that produces those risks
- Provide your employees with hearing protection if you cannot reduce the noise exposure enough by using other methods
- Make sure the legal limits on noise exposure are not exceeded
- Provide your employees with information, instruction and training
- Carry out health surveillance where there is a risk to health.
The Survey Procedure
Noise at work surveys should be conducted by a competent person. The following procedure for a survey is typical:
- Survey of the workplace in question, to gain familiarity in what roles employees carry out within the workplace and the noise issues within the workplace. This enables the Noise at work survey to be planned
- Noise measurements are taken around the workplace to determine the different noise levels that the employees are exposed to. In certain cases it may be applicable to use a dose meter to monitor the employee over their daily shift
- Daily Noise Exposure Levels are calculated for the employees
- A report will be compiled to demonstrate if the current situation within the workplace complies with the controlling noise at work Regulations 2005. The report will demonstrate if the use of ear protection is suitable if high levels of noise exposure exist.
